International Adventures

The summer of 2019 saw Girlguiding IOM members take on exciting adventures as they travelled internationally. Check it out.

Katy (1st Rushen Rainbows) went to Romania

I was selected to go to Romania as part of a Girlguiding NWE trip. I travelled with nine other girls and three leaders from across the North West. In Romania, we helped the local community in a place called Miercurea-Ciuc, by renovating their healing pool.

The pool was outside and the water ran into it directly from a spring, so we had to scrub the walls until they were free from algae.

We also helped to replace broken wooden boards and learnt how to saw wood; some of us had to redirect a river, getting very muddy in the process! One of my favourite parts was meeting the people from one of the villages close by. They showed us their way of life and taught us some of their traditional dances.

Ellie (7th Douglas Guides) went to Prague

I took part in NWE Region’s wide game ‘Adventures in Prague’ as an Adult Volunteer. This meant that I was able to meet lots of groups from the airport, work with the other volunteers to set up for the main event and meet lots of new people around the city.

A lot of people stopped to speak to us in our bright yellow t-shirts as I think they thought we were tour guides- we helped where we could!

One of my highlights was helping out at the evening celebration. It was great fun serving mocktails, decorating everyone in glitter and watching everyone have a good boogie!

5th Douglas Guides and Garwick Rangers went to Prague and Berlin

As part of our week exploring Prague and Berlin, we took part in the NWE Region wide game “Adventures in Prague”. We joined in with 350 other Guides and Rangers to answer questions and complete activities across the city.

We discovered that our map skills were not the best, but we loved taking pictures for the scavenger hunt. We also had a silent disco and dance workshop in the evening. We continued to explore Prague over the next few days and even went on a ghost walk around the city. It was then on to our next stop Berlin, where we used the hop on hop off bus to explore the sights. We all learnt a lot of history about the Berlin Wall and the World Wars. On our final morning we had a visit to the Zoo where we got to see Germany’s only panda bears before heading back to the UK where we got to relax with a trip to the cinema.

Wow, what an amazing week!
